Epilepsy,or“Xian Disease”in Traditional Chinese Medicine,is one of the common neurological diseases. Traditional Chinese Medicine theory believes that the onset of epilepsy is often associated with the liver wind,so most of the time the liver treatment is elected which calms the liver wind and harmonize bodyand Qi. Bupleurum chinese DC. and Gastrodia elata Bl. are two kinds of traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in the treatment of epilepsy. The active ingredients of Bupleurum chinense DC have been suspected to conduct anti?epileptic effect by changing the intracellular ion concentration through multiple pathways, including regulating the secretion of neurotransmitters and significantly increasing the content of ATP by regulating the presynaptic calcium ion pathway. The active ingredients of Gastrodia elata Bl. can effectively change the pathological state of epilepsy by protecting neurons in the hippocampus, inhibiting inflammation in the hippocampus and regulating the secretion ofneurotransmitters. In this paper, the antiepileptic effect of these two Traditional Chinese Medicine was reviewed to provide references for clinical treatment and drug development for canine epilepsy.

Goose astrovirus(GAstV)is a newly member of the astrovirus genus discovered recently in China, which mainly affects goslings under 3 weeks of age. The infection rate is as high as 80%,and the mortality rate can beas high as 50%. The goslings infected with GAstV but survived showed growth inhibition and decreased immune level, and were more susceptible to other pathogens. GAstV could be transmitted vertically as well as horizontally by fecal?oral route, and also showed the characteristics of cross ? host transmission. Up to now,due to the lack of commercialized vaccine and other biological products for this virus and the slow progress of the research on its pathogenic mechanism, the scientific formulation and effective implementation of prevention and control measures for this disease still lacks a sufficient theoretical basis and a sound veterinary system, resulting in the grim situation of this disease prevention and control, which has caused great economic losses to the goose industry in China. In this paper, abrief review of the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenicity, immune response and its pathogenic mechanism of GAstV was carried out, with a view to providing a reference for the in ? depth study of GAstV and the preliminary development of preventive and control measures.

With the development of the society, the importance of pets in human life continues to increase, and more and more pet owners consult veterinarians because they are concerned about the behavioral problems of their pets. However, due to the lack of systematic understanding of dog and cat behavior by most veterinarians and clinical staff,it is difficult to convey the scientific concepts of dog and cat behavior. Meanwhile, inappropriate clinical operations and stressful environments can be one of the important factors that induce behavioral problems in dogs and cats. This article focused on the basic behavioral characteristics, learning, and the stress response in dogs and cats, and summarized the application of behavioral concepts in clinical diagnosis and treatment. We aim to increase the awareness in veterinarians and staff members of the stress in their dog and cat patients. Preliminary grading of dog and cat stress level and tailored schemes for management should be implemented. At the same time, learning of dogs and cats can be incorporated to encourage positive behaviors and reduce their stress during clinical visits.

    CHEN Miao1,2,QI Xiao2,SUN Haoran1,ZHU Yuhang2,XU Chao1*
Guangdong Journal of Animal and Veterinary Science    2022, 47 (3): 55-59,97.   DOI: 10.19978/j.cnki.xmsy.2022.03.11
    Abstract913)      PDF (1192KB)(906)       Save
The palatability is one of the important criteria to measure the success of pet food. Different breeds of pets or the pet at different developmental stages have different palatabilities. Animal factors cannot be ignored in the study of palatability. The special habits of dogs and cats will also affect their palatability choices in food intake, such as differences in the intake of fat, protein and carbohydrates. At present, the conditioned reflex method, the single ? bowl method and the double ? bowl method are commonly used to evaluate the palatability. While evaluating palatability, the conditioned reflex method focuses more on improving the animals’poor feeding habits. The single ? bowl method and the double ?bowl method directly compare the amount of food intake to evaluate the palatability. In recent years, new methods of using electronic devices have also emerged. These electronic devices can monitor a range of biological indicators in feeding animals to assess palatability. This paper summarizes the commonly used palatability evaluation methods for dog and cat pet food and expounds its characteristics,so as to provide a reference for the subsequent research and development of dog and cat pet food.

Chicken is one of the main sources of meat protein with gradually increased proportion in the national meat consumption, therefore consumers are paying more attention to the meat quality. Influenced by the COVID pandemic and bird flu,the market of frozen chicken products is increasing. However, the quality of frozen chicken products generally declines significantly over time. Therefore, breeding researchers not only pay attention to improving broiler production performance, but also study meat quality improvement strategies in large ?? scale production. According to previous studies, the evaluation and detection methods of chicken meat quality varied between reports, yielding inconsistent results. In order to provide references and basic data for building the chicken meat quality evaluation system and the improvement of chicken quality, the evaluation methods (e.g.,physical indicators, chemical composition and sensory evaluation),detection index(e.g.,pH value, meat color, tenderness, water holding capacity, composition of amino acids and fatty acids),and the influencing factors(e.g.,breed,age,feed composition, management, pre??slaughter stress)of chicken meat quality were summarized in this paper.

Infectious Bursal Disease(IBD)is an acute, highly contagious infectious disease caused by infectious bursal disease virus(IBDV)mainly affecting young chickens. It is characterized by severe injury of bursa of Fabricius and immunosuppression. Since 1980s,IBDV has been found in many countries and regions. In addition,IBDV variants with increased virulence, namely variant IBDV(vIBDV)and variant/very virulent IBDV(vvIBDV)had emerged. IBD cause significant economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. At present, comprehensive prevention and control measures combining vaccination and biosafety are mainly adopted. In this paper,IBD attenuated live vaccines, inactivated vaccines, immune complex vaccines, recombinant vector live vaccines, subunit vaccines and DNA vaccines that have been commercialized or are under development are reviewed,in order to provide theoretical reference for better prevention and control of IBD.

China is a major aquaculture production country. In recent years, aquaculture industry has developed rapidly, but the problem of disease has become increasingly prominent, seriously threatening the healthy development of aquaculture. Among these,Streptococcosis is the most serious. Streptococci can infect a variety of aquatic organisms. The pathogens of streptococcal disease include Streptococcus iniae,Streptococcus agalactiae,Streptococcus parauberis. Typical symptoms of the Streptococcosis include behavioural abnormalities, proptosis, and meningitis. At present, antibiotics are still the first choice for the treatment of Streptococcosis, but long-term use of antibiotics is not conducive to the long- term development of aquaculture. Vaccine is an effective way to prevent and control theStreptococcosis, but there is no approved commercial vaccine. This article will introduce the etiology, epidemiology, clinical symptoms, pathogenesis, and detection technology of streptococcal disease, new strategies, and thinking of the prevention and control of streptococcal disease,in order to provide a reference for the prevention and control of Streptococcosis.

Canine hip dysplasia is one of the more common clinical hereditary diseases. Treatment methods include conventional conservative treatment and surgical operations such as three pelvic incisions and total hip replacement. Considering various factors, some pet owners will choose total hip replacement surgery as the final choice, and are also eager to find a treatment method between conventional conservative treatment and total hip replacement surgery. In recent years, breakthroughs in the basic theory of acupuncture and moxibustion have brought acupuncture and moxibustion medicine to an unprecedented new height. This article takes a case of hip dysplasia in a golden retriever as an example to comprehensively introduce the diagnosis and treatment process of traditional Chinese veterinary acupuncture and moxibustion,so as to provide veterinarians clinical use of traditional acupuncture and moxibustion. It provides new ideas for the treatment of canine hip dysplasia, and opens up a new situation for the treatment of canine hip dysplasia in multiple, multi?form, and multi?channel ways.
