Porcine epidemic diarrhea(PED),caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus(PEDV),is a highly contagious and lethal infectious disease in pigs. The virus primarily targets the intestinal epithelium, leading to acute diarrhea and dehydration. Since the emergence of highly pathogenic PEDV variants in China in late 2010,PEDV has spread globally, causing significant economic losses on the global swine industry. This review systematically summarizes the current epidemiological trends, genetic variations and hazards of PEDV. Focusing on the three fundamental components of infection source, transmission route, and susceptible animal of infectious diseases, this paper highlights the challenges in current PED prevention and control, and proposes a comprehensive PED prevention and control strategy emphasizing enhanced biosecurity measures and scientifically immunization programs.
