The pig breeding industry serves as a critical foundation for ensuring a stable supply of pork, enhancing the core competitiveness of the industry, and promoting the high?quality development of animal husbandry. With the advancement of technologies such as genomic selection, marker?assisted selection, genome?wide association studies, and intelligent phenotyping, pig breeding is gradually transitioning from traditional phenotype?based selection and pedigree?based breeding toward genomic breeding, intelligent breeding, and whole?industry?chain collaborative breeding. This review systematically outlines the developmental trajectory and core elements of pig breeding technologies, analyzes the construction logic of a modern seed industry system and the synergistic development trends among core breeding populations, multiplication systems, and commercial pig production. It further explores the major challenges faced by China’s pig breeding industry in areas such as independent innovation of core germplasm resources, collection of high?quality phenotypic data, joint breeding mechanisms, disease resistance selection, and the utilization of local pig breeds. Prospects for strategic directions and technological breakthroughs toward 2035 are also discussed. This review aims to provide theoretical references and practical guidance for the high ? quality development of the pig seed industry.

Meat flavor is an important trait in the evaluation of meat pigeon genetic resources and the breeding of high ? quality meat pigeons, while lipid deposition and fatty acid composition in the pectoral muscle are key determinants of flavor development. To investigate the dynamic patterns of lipid deposition in the pectoral muscle of Shiqi squabs and the potential regulatory roles of positively selected genes involved in lipid metabolism,Shiqi pigeons were sampled at 1,7,14,21,28,and 35 days of age. Pectoral muscle samples were collected after slaughter, and lipid droplet distribution, fatty acid composition, and the expression profiles of positively selected lipid metabolism? related genes were analyzed using Oil Red O staining, gas chromatography, and quantitative real?time PCR(qPCR), respectively. The results showed age?dependent, stage?specific changes in lipid droplet distribution in the pectoral muscle. Compared with that at 1 day of age,the lipid droplet area initially decreased and subsequently increased. At 35 days of age,the lipid droplet area was significantly greater than that at 1 day of age(P<0.05) and highly significantly greater than those at 7,14,21,and 28 days of age(P<0.01). Saturated fatty acids constituted the largest proportion of fatty acids in the pectoral muscle, whereas the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids gradually increased with age. From 1 to 14 days of age,PPARα,which is involved in fatty acid oxidation, and its downstream genes, including ECHS1 and HADH,were highly expressed. After 14 days of age,the expression of genes involved in fatty acid synthesis and transport, including LPIN1,ACSS3,and APOB,was upregulated, whereas the expression of the endocytosis?related gene AP2M1 was downregulated. Correlation analysis showed that oxidative metabolism?related genes, such as ACOX2 and ACADSB,were generally significantly negatively correlated with short? and medium?chain saturated fatty acids(C6:0,C8:0,C10:0,and C12:0;r=-0.81 to -0.99,P<0.05). In contrast, genes such as ACOX3 and HADH were significantly positively correlated with long?chain saturated fatty acids(C17:0,C18:0,C20: 0,and C24:0)and several polyunsaturated fatty acids(C18:2n?6t,C18:3n?3,C20:3n?6,and C22:6n?3;r=0.83– 1.00,P<0.05). Among genes involved in anabolic metabolism,LPIN1 was highly significantly positively correlated with cis?oleic acid(C18:1n?9 cis;r=0.94,P<0.01),while SOAT1 was highly significantly positively correlated with myristic acid(C14:0)and docosadienoic acid(C22:2n?6;r=0.94 and 1.00,respectively;P<0.01). In conclusion, lipid deposition and fatty acid composition in the pectoral muscle of Shiqi squabs exhibit distinct temporal changes during growth and development. Positively selected genes related to lipid metabolism may regulate pectoral muscle lipid deposition by modulating fatty acid oxidation, synthesis, and transport.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the application effect of Chebula Retz. extract on coccidiosis control in Hy?Line Gray laying hens at the early laying stage. Three groups with respective treatments were established, including the coccidia?infected control group,Chebula Retz. extract treatment group and healthy control group. A total of 100 Hy?Line Gray laying hens were randomly separated from a coccidiosis?infected house as the infected control group, which were fed basal diet without any anti ? coccidial treatment. The remaining 125,400 infected laying hens in the same house served as the treatment group, fed basal diet supplemented with Chebula Retz. extract. In addition, another flock of 125,500 laying hens free of coccidiosis with identical rearing conditions was selected as the healthy control group and fed basal diet. The trial lasted for 9 days under unified management in a commercial?scale layer farm. The results showed that dietary supplementation with Chebula Retz. extract significantly recovered feed intake and reduced mortality and culling losses of Hy?Line Gray laying hens. In terms of fecal coccidial oocyst counts, the oocyst per gram(OPG)value of the treatment group decreased significantly(P<0.05)compared with the infected control group, with a reduction rate of over 90% on day 3 and a zero OPG value on day 5 of the trial. For production performance, the average body weight and average laying rate of the treatment group were increased by 1.3% and 6.9%,respectively,relative to the healthy control group. In conclusion, supplementation of Chebula Retz. extract in feed can effectively control coccidial infection, restore feed intake, reduce mortality and culling, and improve average body weight and laying rate of Hy?Line Gray laying hens.

To develop a quadruplex TaqMan real ? time quantitative PCR assay for the accurate and rapid detection of Pigeon Paramyxovirus Type 1(PPMV?1),Pigeon Circovirus(PiCV),Pigeon Rotavirus(PiRV),and Pigeon Adenovirus(PiAdV),specific primers and probes were designed based on the conserved gene sequences of the four viruses.By optimizing primer/ probe concentrations and amplification conditions,a quadruplex detection system was established and subsequently evaluated for standard curve linearity, specificity, sensitivity, repeatability, and clinical applicability were evaluated. The standard curves for all four targets exhibited excellent linearity, with R2 values all greater than 0.99;no cross ? amplification occurred with nucleic acids of other common pigeon viruses, indicating good specificity;the minimum detectable limits for standard plasmids PPMV?1,PiCV,PiRV,and PiAdV were 1×101,1×101,1×101,and 1×102 copies/μL,respectively;intra? and inter?assay coefficient of variation(CV)of CT values for both intra ? and inter ? assay experiments was less than 2% ,showing low fluctuation and good repeatability. To evaluate the method's applicability and reliability,115 pigeon clinical samples were tested, and the positive detection rates for PPMV?1,PiCV,PiRV,and PiAdV were 20.87%,60.87%,15.65%,and 41.73%, respectively, suggesting a high proportion of multi ? pathogen infections in clinical samples. In summary, the quadruplex TaqMan real?time quantitative PCR method established in this study demonstrates high sensitivity, strong specificity, and good repeatability, providing a reliable technical tool for the rapid screening and diagnosis of common pigeon viruses.

Streptococcus suis is an important zoonotic pathogen, with most healthy pigs carry one or multiple serotypes of S. suis, which constitutes a potential health threat to workers in the pig slaughtering industry. This study investigated the serotypes distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles of S. suis isolates from slaughterhouses, aiming to provide references for improving public health safety. Tonsil samples were collected from healthy pigs in three slaughterhouses around Shenzhen. S. suis was isolated and identified, followed by serotyping via PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the disk diffusion method to determine the resistance profiles of the isolates. A total of 50 tonsil samples were collected,of with 35 testing positive for S. suis, yielding an overall positivity rate of 70.00%. Slaughterhouse A had a positivity rate of 73.33%(11/15),with three serotype 2 strains isolated, and serotypes 1 and 24 being predominant. Slaughterhouse B had a positivity rate of 70.00%(14/20),with two serotype 2 strains isolated, and serotype 16 being predominant. Slaughterhouse C had a positivity rate of 66.67% (10/15),with no serotype 2 strains isolated, and serotype 20 being predominant. Multidrug resistance was observed in all isolates. The resistance rates were as follows:doxycycline,97.14%(34/35);azithromycin,91.43%(32/35); gentamicin,60.00%(21/35);kanamycin,54.29%(19/35);florfenicol,34.29%(12/35);amoxicillin,28.57%(10/ 35);cefotaxime,11.43%(4/35);and amoxicillin-clavulanate,2.86%(1/35). The high carriage rate of S. suis in healthy pigs in this region, combined with the predominance of zoonotic serotypes and multidrug resistance, underscores the need for continuous surveillance to inform the development of effective prevention and control strategies.

In this study, two suspected Streptococcus strains were isolated from tissue samples(heart and lung) of diseased pigs collected from two large?scale pig farms in Shaoguan and Guangzhou, designated as GDsg-2026 and GDgz- 2026,respectively. The isolated were subjected to systematic characterization, including morphological observation, biochemical identification, sequencing of the 16S rRNA and glyS gene, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Both strains exhibited alpha?hemolysis on blood agar plates and appeared as Gram?positive cocci in chains under microscopic examination. Their biochemical profiles were consistent with those of Streptococcus pluranimalium. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed 99.5%- 99.9% homology with S.pluranimalium strains derived from pig(MH329626),cattle(ON561146),goat(ON715886),chicken(MN023013),and camel(ON561146)in the GenBank database. Among these,GDsg?2026 was most closely related to pig?derived strains, whereas GDgz?2026 showed the closest relationship to bovine and camel?derived strains. The glyS gene sequences exhibited 97.7%- 100.0% homology with previously reported bovine(CP025536)and porcine(CP078544)isolates,albeit with certain genetic distance variations. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing demonstrated that both strains were highly susceptible to enrofloxacin, cefazolin, cefradine, and cefoperazone, but showed significant resistance to lincomycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim, erythromycin, kanamycin, neomycin sulfate, and bacitracin. This study provides a valuable theoretical basis for the etiological characterization and epidemiological investigation of porcine?derived S. pluranimalium.

To determine the growth curve, blood physiological and biochemical parameters and main organ weights of C57BL/6 mice introduced and produced in our center,so as to provide basic reference data for the application of C57BL/6 mice. The body weight of 80 SPF C57BL/6 mice(equal male and female)aged 3-8 weeks was measured, and the growth curve was plotted. Twenty C57BL/6 mice(5 - and 10-week-old,equal male and female)were randomly selected for in vivo weighing. Following anesthesia, blood was collected via retro-orbital puncture for hematological and biochemical analyses, and major organs were dissected and weighed. Body weight increased with the age, with rapid growth at 3-5 weeks before gradually stabilizing. Significant differences(P<0.01 or P<0.05) were observed in certain hematological parameters, biochemical indices, organ weights, and organ coefficients between sexes within the same age group and between age groups within the same sex. The results of this study provided basic reference data for the application of C57BL/6 mice. It was found that week age and gender had certain effects on blood physiological and biochemical indexes, major organ weight and organ coefficient of C57BL/6 mice. Attention should be paid to the selection of week age and sex when using C57BL/6 mice.

This article systematically reviews the current status, mechanisms, and future development trends of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) in veterinary clinical practice. Owing to its unique advantages of holistic regulation, low toxicity, minimal side effects, and low propensity for inducing drug resistance,TCM plays an irreplaceable role in modern green animal husbandry. Regarding its application areas,TCM is widely used in the following:① prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, through immunomodulators such as Banqing Granules and Astragalus Polysaccharides to inhibit viral replication, and classical formulas such as Bai Tou Weng San and Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang to treat bacterial respiratory and digestive tract infections; ② regulation of production performance,by employing Jianwei San and Buzhong Yiqi San to strengthen the spleen, stimulate appetite, tonify qi, and nourish blood, thereby improving feed conversion rates;③ prevention and treatment of reproductive disorders, utilizing Cuiqing San to promote estrus and postpartum preparations to facilitate uterine recovery;④ adjunctive treatment of parasitic diseases and alleviation of secondary symptoms. With advances in formulation technology,TCM has evolved from traditional powdered preparations to efficient modern dosage forms, including extracted injections, fermented preparations, and nanoformulations. Current research faces challenges such as the need to deepen mechanistic understanding and improve quality standards. However, under the global trend of“antibiotic reduction and prohibition,”through precision, standardization, organic integration with Western veterinary practices, and the application of modern techniques such as network pharmacology and artificial intelligence,TCM is poised to demonstrate broader prospects in green farming.

To systematically evaluate the quality status of commercially available pet food probiotic products, this study conducted analyses from multiple perspectives, including strain compliance, accuracy of stated viable counts, strain stability, and gastric fluid tolerance. The objective was to provide a scientific basis for the establishment of industry standards and the enhancement of product quality. Forty -four commercially available products were collected. Strain compliance was assessed against the“Catalogue of Microorganisms Permitted for Use in Feed”. Viable counts were determined using the plate count method. Strain identification was performed via MALDI-TOF MS. Storage survival and digestive survival rates were evaluated through accelerated stability testing and in vitro simulated gastric fluid testing. The findings revealed that some products utilized strains, such as Clostridium butyricum, not currently listed in the aforementioned catalogue. Over 75% of samples had significantly lower viable counts than the labeled values. Strain identification consistency was poor, with the actual detection frequency being only 50% of that indicated on the labels. Significant differences were observed among strains:Bacillus licheniformis demonstrated high storage stability and gastric fluid tolerance;Lactobacillus plantarum declined rapidly and exhibited extremely low gastric fluid tolerance(<0.3%);Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed low storage stability, although some samples displayed relatively high gastric fluid tolerance. Quality issues prevalent in current commercial products include non- compliant strain usage, inflated viable count claims, and deficiencies in strain authenticity and stability. This multi- dimensional study reveals key quality defects in this sector, providing data to support the development of relevant industry standards, optimization of production processes, and informed consumer choices.

Rabies is a severe zoonotic disease with an almost 100% case?fatality rate, posing a major threat to global public health and imposing a heavy burden on both human and animal health. This study aimed to evaluate the current animal rabies prevention and control strategies implemented in Shenzhen, with the ultimate goal of further optimizing and enhancing local rabies control effectiveness. In response to prevailing challenges in China’s animal rabies control program—including uneven immunization coverage, outdated regulatory approaches, and insufficient public compliance—this study, grounded in collaborative governance theory, proposed an innovative“four ? dimensional synergy”model for animal rabies immunization governance. This model is characterized by law?based governance, accessibility, digital intelligence, and systematization, which correspond to the core tenets of collaborative governance: clear accountability, accessible services, technology empowerment, and integrated resource allocation. Specifically, the model takes law ? based governance as the cornerstone to delineate the responsibilities of governments, enterprises, dog owners, and community organizations, thereby addressing long ? standing issues of ambiguous accountability and inadequate law enforcement. It is service?oriented to improve public willingness and satisfaction by optimizing immunization clinics, promoting appointment ? based vaccination, and providing free rabies vaccination. It adopts smart digitalization as a tool to rebuild a closed?loop management system covering the entire process from vaccination to supervision. It relies on systematization as a guarantee to integrate social resources and form a multi?stakeholder governance structure led by the government, participated by society, and supplemented by the market. Through deep integration and coordinated advancement of the four dimensions, this study intends to establish a scientific, efficient, fully covered, and sustainable governance system for animal rabies immunization. immunization antibody levels above 85% every year since 2020,reduced the risk of vaccine quality disputes by more than 90%,and established a“15?minute immunization circle”,resulting in a substantial reduction in the risk of zoonotic rabies transmission. In conclusion, this study not only provides an operational framework for consolidating and strengthening rabies control in Shenzhen but also offers important theoretical references and practical pathways for other regions in China to break through bottlenecks in animal rabies immunization governance and contribute to the global goal of zero human rabies deaths by 2030.

The Chinese crocodile lizards(Shinisaurus crocodilurus)is a first?class protected animal in China. Due to the intense human activities, the species is currently at risk of extinction. I To halt the decline in its population, urgent rescue?based ex situ conservation measures are needed. t Ensuring appropriate environmental water quality is a critical component of ex situ conservation and plays a vital role in the survival of relocated individuals. In this study, water samples were collected from three sites:the native habitat in Linzhouding Nature Reserve in Maoming City(SC1),the Guangxi Daguishan crocodile lizards National Nature Reserve(SC3),and the captive breeding area of Guangzhou Zoo(SC2),which serves as an ex situ conservation site. The physicochemical properties and microbial communities of the water samples were systematically analyzed. The results showed that SC2 differed from SC1 and SC3 in pH and hardness, whereas other physicochemical parameters showed minor variation. The dominant microbial communities across the three water samples were Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota. This study aims to clarify the similarities and differences between the water conditions of native habitat and ex situ conservation sites of the Chinese crocodile lizard, providing a scientific reference for ex situ conservation efforts in other regions.

Canine transmissible venereal tumor(CTVT)is a common directly transmissible round cell tumor in dogs. This report describes a case of CTVT in a 6?year?old intact male Golden Retriever. The dog was presented with dysuria, urine dribbling, and frequent licking of the genital area. Based on the mating history and local examination,a nodular proliferation with an irregular surface that bled easily on contact was identified at the distal glans penis. Urinary catheterization could be performed slowly, indicating that the local mass had caused urethral irritation or compression, but not complete obstruction. Complete blood count and serum biochemical revealed no obvious abnormalities. Histopathological examination showed diffuse proliferation of round tumor cells with prominent cytoplasmic vacuolation, distinct nucleoli, and frequent mitotic figures, confirming the diagnosis of CTVT. Considering the distal genital location of the lesion, the marked local irritation, and the associated urinary dysfunction, tumor excision combined with castration was performed, followed by postoperative intravenous vincristine chemotherapy(0.54–0.76 mg per treatment, once weekly for 4 weeks). After treatment, the dog showed only mild lethargy. The surgical site healed well, urination returned to normal, and no local recurrence was observed during follow?up. This case suggests that, for genital CTVT with local functional involvement, individualized treatment should be planned based on a comprehensive assessment of lesion extent and local effects. For localized cases with marked local symptoms and a need for rapid reduction of tumor burden, surgery combined with postoperative vincristine chemotherapy may have practical clinical value.

This study aimed to explore the effects of competitive interference under mixed species housing conditions on the reproductive behavior of Whooper Swans(Cygnus cygnus)at Guangzhou Zoo. The study population consisted of 16 individuals(11 females and 5 males)in Yanming Lake of Guangzhou Zoo. Their behavioral rhythms were analyzed. A control group(exposed to competitive interference,2 females and 2 males)and an experimental group(competitive interference excluded,2 females and 2 males)were established. Data on reproductive behaviors were obtained through field observation and collection, and the effects of competitive interference on the reproductive behavior of Whooper Swans were compared and analyzed. The results showed that no reproductive behavior occurred in the control group, whereas a complete reproductive behavior chain was observed in the experimental group. In the control group, vigilance behavior was highly synchronized with food competition(r=0.842,P=0.001),the behavioral rhythm passively adapted to disturbances, and an effective sex?based division of labor was not established. In contrast, the experimental group exhibited a stable behavioral rhythm, with females dominating reproductive activities and males taking charge of vigilance. Food competition was the most widespread type of interferenceand a key factor inhibiting reproductive behavior (r=- 0.745,P=0.005). The findings provide a reference for promoting natural reproduction of Whooper Swans at Guangzhou Zoo.

The rapid development of smart animal husbandry has imposed new requirements on the cultivation of animal husbandry and veterinary talents. The traditional talent cultivation model faces practical challenges, including an incomplete practical trainingsystem,a disconnection between teaching content and job requirements, and a single teaching evaluation method. This paper takes the construction of the Gansu Dairy Cow Modern Industry College as an example. Based on ananalysis of the talent demand in smart animal husbandry,it systematically examines the problems existing in the talent cultivation of the animal husbandry and veterinary medicine professional group, and proposes a construction pathwayforthe modern industry college, with "golden specialties, golden courses, golden teachers, golden textbooks, and golden bases" as itscore components, therebyproviding talent support for the high? quality development of smart animal husbandry.

Under the strategy of rural revitalization, this study explores practical pathways for integrating farming culture into the curriculum development of agriculture ? related majors in higher vocational education. Through empirical research at Xiangyang Polytechnic College, the study systematically analyzes the transformation mechanisms of farming culture’s educational value, pathways for curriculum integration, and collaborative education models. The findings reveal that incorporating the knowledge systems, ecological wisdom, and value systems of farming culture— through a "Three?stage Four?dimensional" curriculum framework,a "field?based teaching" model, and a multi? stakeholder collaboration mechanism—effectively enhances students’cultural literacy, innovation capabilities, and practical skills. This study provide theoretical foundations and practical paradigms for cultural education in agricultural vocational training, offering important guidance for cultivating a new generation of talents who "understand and love agriculture."
